The material relates to MacLellan's career as well as her personal interests, particularly in the field of women's issues.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:MacLellan, Margaret, d. 1973 : Margaret MacLellan, public servant, born in Dresden, Ont., received her education from the University of Toronto, B.A. 1923. Prior to joining the public service, she taught for two years in Ontario Secondary Schools. In 1931, she began her public service career as a research assistant for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and in 1944 transferred to the Department of Labour as a statistician. In 1946, she moved to the Department of Justice, where she worked until 1964, first as a research librarian and later as a Combines Investigation Officer. In addition to her successful career in the Canadian public service, she was closely associated with many women's organizations.
MacLellan was a founding member of the Canadian Committee on the Status of Women in 1953. In 1959, she was elected to the International Federation of University Women Committee on the Legal and Economic Status of Women. She was the President of the Canadian Federation of University Women from 1961 to 1964 and was the Vice-President of the National Council of Women from 1964 to 1967. She prepared a report in 1968 for the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, entitled "The History of Women's Rights in Canada", which was later published in book form.
MacLellan became a founding member of the Ottawa branch of the Elizabeth Fry Society, and from 1955 to 1958, she served as Chairman of the Provincial Council of the Elizabeth Fry Society. Margaret MacLellan retired from the Department of Justice in 1964. She moved to Toronto in 1970 and became involved in the National Ad Hoc Action Committee on the Status of Women.
