Martland, Ronald, 1907-1997 : Ronald Martland was born February 10, 1907 in Liverpool, England to John and Ada Martland (née Wild). When Ronald was four years old, the family moved to Edmonton. He graduated from high school at age 14 and worked as a page in the Alberta Legislature for two years. He then attended the University of Alberta, earning a B.A. in 1926 and an LL.B in 1928. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and earned a B.C.L. from Oxford University in 1931, and was the first Canadian recipient of the Vinerian Prize.

After returning to Edmonton in 1932, Judge Martland was called to the Bar of Alberta, where he practiced until 1958. He taught at the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta and University of Calgary and was a bencher of the Law Society of Alberta from 1948 to 1958. He was Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1958 to 1982.

In 1935, Judge Martland married Iris Bury and they were to have three children.

In 1982, Judge Martland was made a Companion of the Order of Canada; in 1984, he received the Alberta of Excellence; and he received Honorary Degrees from the University of Alberta and the University of King's College, Nova Scotia. He was also Honorary Professor of Law of the Universities of Alberta and Calgary, and was a Honorary fellow of Hertford College, Oxford.

Judge Martland served as Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Athabasca. Later, while a member of the Supreme Court, he served as Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and was appointed Chancellor Emeritus.

Ronald Martland died November 20, 1997.
