Included are the Anglo-American and Stefansson-Anderson Expedition diaries, microfilm, 1906-1912, 2 microfilm reels: M-3617 and M-3618; Canadian Arctic Expedition diaries and other papers, 1914-1918, 20 cm; and correspondence, 1922, 2 pages.
The fonds also contains photographs, taken in 1979, of a cache left by Stefansson during the Canadian Arctic Expedition, Lougheed Island, N.W.T. in 1916.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Stefansson, Vilhjalmur, 1879-1962 : Vilhjalmur Stefansson, born at Gimli, Man. in 1879, is known primarily for his Arctic explorations and discoveries. After accompanying the Leffingwell-Mikkelsen expedition of 1906-1907 to the Mackenzie Delta as an ethnologist and leading the Stefansson-Anderson expedition of 1908-1912 in the central Arctic coast, Stefansson was given command of the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1918. As a result of these voyages, he discovered new land north of Prince Patrick Island and west of Heiberg Island, mapped large areas of the Arctic Coast, and extended his knowledge of Inuit life.
He was the recipient of a number of international awards. He authored several books including, The Friendly Arctic, 1921.
