Fonds consists of four files of correspondence kept by Edward Richmond, concerning the case Noble and Wolf v. Alley, 1948-1953, two files of motions, notices, orders and affidavits, 1948-1950, judgements of the Ontario Supreme Court, 1948, the Ontario Court of Appeal, 1949, and the Supreme Court of Canada (S.C.C.), 1950, handwritten notes taken by Edward Richmond during the S.C.C. proceedings, 12 page article written by Edward Richmond on the case extract of proceedings of the Ontario Legislature, Wed. March 22, 1950 concerning second reading of Bill No. 78 "An Act to amend the Conveyancing and Law of Property Act.", S.C.C. Appeal Book, Factums of the Appellant and Respondent, and House of Commons Debates, April 9 and 12, 1948 on Human Rights.

Richmond, Edward, 1920- : Edward Richmond, barrister and solicitor, born in 1920 at London, Ont., received his education from the University of Western Ontario, B.A. 1941, and the University of Toronto, M.A. 1942. He was called to the Bar in 1946, appointed a Q.C. in 1963, and was President of the Middlesex Law Association in 1973.

In 1948, he had his first Major case Noble and Wolf V. Alley, /1951/S.C.R. 64. Bernard Wolf, a London Ont. merchant, purchased a cottage from Annie Maud Noble in April 1948. His lawyer, Edward Richmond acted on the purchase and found the racially restrictive clause when he searched the title. He worded the requisition to void the clause. Before he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada (S.C.C.) in 1950, John Cartwright argued the case before Mr. Justice Schroeder of the Supreme Court of Ontario and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

The Joint Public Relations Committee of B'nai Brith and the Canadian Jewish Congress joined the fight in the Ontario Court of Appeal. Lost on appeal the case was appealed to the S.C.C. with John J. Robinette acting for the appellant Noble in June 1950. In November, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the appeal must be allowed thus declaring racially restrictive convenants invalid in Canada.
