Fonds consists of microfilmed expedition records including a journal kept while aboard the H.M.S. Helca during an expedition headed by Captain William Parry, dated 25 March-1 November 1827; memoranda book, 1848-1852; journal kept while outfitting the H.M.S. North Star, 1852; diaries and sketch books, 1852-1853; private journal kept aboard the H.M.S. North Star incorporating copies of letters exchanged between McCormick and senior officers of the expedition, dated 12 April 1852-21 September 1853; rough diary of events and personal experiences kept while aboard the H.M.S. North Star, dated 21 April 1852-19 August 1853. This material is located on microfilm reels A-1622, A-1623 and A-1710.

McCormick, Robert, 1800-1890 : Naval officer, surgeon explorer.

After studying medicine, Robert McCormick entered the Royal Navy in 1823. Following personally disagreeable service in the West Indies and North Sea, he volunteered for Arctic service with Captain William Edward Parry with whom he sailed in the Helca in an expedition to the north of Spitzbergen in the summer of 1827. Further disagreeable service in the West Indies and South America was followed by his appointment as surgeon to the Erebus in 1839, then going on a voyage to the Antarctic.

After several shore appointments, McCormick was appointed surgeon of the North Star in 1852 which took part in the search for Sir John Franklin. During this period he proposed, and to some extent was able to carry out, a search for Sir John Franklin in an open boat. He returned to England in the Phoenix in October 1853. Although a man of considerable ability, he was frustrated by failure to gain promotion, perhaps in part because his relations with the Admiralty were sadly wanting in tact, and, in 1865, he was retired from the Royal Navy.

In 1854, McCormick published his Narrative of a Boat Expedition up the Wellington Channel in 1852. The accounts of his several voyages and expeditions were published in 1884 under the title Voyages of Discovery in the Arctic and Antarctic Seas and round the World.
