Item is a deed granting a tract of land four acres by eighty acres on the south shore of the Detroit River [now in Sandwich Township, Essex County, Ontario] to Alexis Maisonville, signed (with totemic marks) by the chiefs Pontiac and Ocquichion on behalf of the Ottawa nation, 18 september 1765. An inscription made in 1881 by C.F. Labadie at the foot of the document reports the transfer of title from Maisonville to L'Aventure Reaume in 1769 and on to Antoine Louis Descomptes Labadie (d. 1806). A further note in the margin of the photostat identifies Mrs. Marentette as the daughter of C.F. Labadie.

Maisonville, Alexis, fl. 1760-1813 : Alexis Maisonville (fl. 1760-1813) was active in the vicinity of Detroit and, after 1796, at Sandwich, Upper Canada. He served with the British forces during the American Revolutionary War and was associated with the Indian Department for many years. Appointed one of the first Justices of the Peace of the newly-created Hesse (later, Western) District in July 1788, he was named on each new General Commission of the Peace through 1813.

Though signed in the presence of George Crogan, a deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, this deed was contrary to the Royal Proclamation of 7 October 1763.
