Shumiatcher, K.C. He received his education at the University of Alberta, B.A. 1940, LL.B. 1941; a travelling scholarship to Japan 1940; and LL.M. at the University of Toronto 1942, S.J.D. 1945. He was admitted to the Bars of Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories; appointed a K.C. 1948; Officer of the Order of Canada 1982; and Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan 1987.
He served with the R.C.A.F. 1943-1945 (air-gunner); Law Officer, Dept. of Attorney-General of Saskatchewan 1945-1949; Council to the Labour Board of Saskatchewan; Personal Advisor and Assistant to the Premier of Saskatchewan T.C. Douglas; and drafted Saskatchewan Bill of Rights in 1947.
In addition, general practise of Law since 1949; Lecturer in adult education at the University of Western Ontario and in law at Dalhousie, Toronto and Saskatchewan universities; and t.v. lecture series on International Affairs, law, Indian Affairs, civil liberties, legal problems of farmers and military law. Publications include Assault on Freedom, 1962, Man of Law: A Model, 1979 and Welfare: Hidden Backlash, 1971. National Chairman, Civil Liberties Section Canadian Bar Association; director of the Institute of International Affairs and the Saskatchewan Arts Centre; Dominion Drama Society Council and active in many other organizations.
