Hall, Emmett M., 1898-1995 : Emmett Matthew Hall, judge, was born November 29, 1898 in St. Columban, Que., to James and Alice Hall (née O'Shea). In 1910 the family moved to Saskatoon. He received his education from the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with an LL.B. in 1919. He was called to the provincial bar in 1922, married legal secretary Isabel Mary Parker the same year and began practicing in Saskatoon. The couple were to have five children.

He held a number of judicial positions, including District Court Judge, Battleford; Bencher, 1946-57, and President, 1952, Law Society of Saskatchewan; Chief Justice, Court of Queen's Bench of Saskatchewan and Court of Appeal, 1957; and Chief Justice, Saskatchewan and Court of Appeal, 1961. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1962 and served until 1973. In 1967, his was the sole dissent in the Supreme Court judgement upholding the 1959 murder conviction of Steven Truscott.

Hall also served the community in various capacities related to health and education. He was Chair of the Royal Commission on Health Services in 1961, which recommended the creation of a universal health care system; he is known as one of the fathers of Canadian medicare. In 1969 he co-founded SOS Children's Villages Canada. He was President, Catholic School Trustees Association of Saskatchewan from 1942 to 1952; Chair of the Committee on the Aims and Objectives of Education in Ontario from 1965 to 1968; and Chair of Canada UBLS (University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland Committee) from 1967 to 1971.

He was a member of the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan from 1942 to 1954, lectured in Law from 1949 to 1958, and In 1978, became Chancellor.

In 1918 Hall became a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was created a Knight of Malta in 1958, of the Order of St. Gregory in 1968 and of the Holy Sepulchre in 1969.

Hall received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan in 1964, received the Bronfman Award for Public Health Achievement in 1966, and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1974.

His lecture, "The Supreme Court in the New Canada: Essentials of a New Constitution," was published probably in 1978 by the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan.

Hall died November 12, 1995.

"Aggressive in Pursuit: The Life of Justice Emmett Hall," by Frederick Vaughan, was published in 2004 by University of Toronto Press.
