Plaut, Jonathan V, 1942-2012 : Jonathan V. Plaut, the son of Rabbi W. Gunther and Elizabeth Plaut, was born in 1942 at Chicago Ill. He received his education from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn., B.A., and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Cincinnati, Bachelor 1968, Masters 1970 and Doctoral 1977 of Hebrew Letters.

After his ordination he served as spiritual leader of Congregation Beth El in Windsor from 1970 until 1984 when he became Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in San Jose, California. Rabbi Plaut held a number of positions with a variety of local and national organizations while in Windsor, including member of the executive committee of the Canadian Council of Liberal Congregations, 1970 to 1984, president of the Windsor chapter of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, chairman of the United Jewish Appeal in Windsor, 1981-1982.

During the course of his doctoral research on the history of the Jews of Windsor, Rabbi Plaut recognized the need for a national Jewish historical society. He became one of the founders of the Jewish Historical Society of Canada and served as its first archives chairman. He also served as editor of the Society's bi-annual Journal from its founding in 1977 until his departure from Canada in 1984.

Jonathan Plaut died in 2012.
