The fonds also contains military photographs relating to Nicholson's books including "The Fighting Newfoundlander", "Three Nations", "The Gunners of Canada", and "The Whilte Cross in Canada". Subjects include various battlefields and war memorials in France, as well as Canadian troops serving in Europe during WWII.
Also included are camera-ready sketches of Canadian army, navy, and air force badges, [before 1953].
Fonds consists of layout maps that were included in various books relating to Canadian military history written by Gerald William Lingen Nicholson. Also included are single sheet war maps related to the Korean War and to the Second World War in Europe and the Aleutian Islands.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Nicholson, G.W.L. (Gerald William Lingen), 1902-1980 : Colonel Gerald William Lingen Nicholson born in 1902 in England, came to Canada in 1919. He received his education from Queen's University, B.A. 1931, and the University of Toronto, Bachelor's in Pedagogy 1935. Before the Second World War he was a high school principal in Saskatchewan.
After serving with the Prince Albert Volunteers in the early part of the war, Nicholson joined the Historical Section, General Staff, as narrator for Pacific Command in 1943. He successively held the appointments of Officer in Charge of the Historical Section at Canadian Military Headquarters, London; and Deputy Director and Director Historical Section, Army Headquarters, Ottawa. Upon retiring from the Army in 1961, he returned to teaching for one year then continued with his writing career.
He is the author of Marlborough and the War of the Spanish Succession (1955), The Canadians in Italy, 1943-1945 (1957), Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919 (1962), Three Nations (1962), The Fighting Newfoundlander (1964), The White Cross in Canada: A History of St. John Ambulance (1967), The Gunners of Canada Vol. I (1967), More Fighting Newfoundlanders (1969), The Gunners of Canada Vol. II (1972), Canada's Nursing Sisters (1975), Seventy Years of Service: A History of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (1977), and keep Your Forks, on Fifty Years at Red Pine Camp, (1979).
