Fonds consists of personal information on Jones and his publications, 1934-2000 scientific lectures 1942-1985; his diary 1929-1937, 1948-2000; spectrographic laboratory records, 1938-1972; and professional correspondence with scientific colleagues, post-doctoral fellows, guest researches who worked or studied under Dr. Jones at the National Research Council, 1936-2001. Material on Jones' interest in the history of spectroscopy and Japanese culture. Correspondence with family and personal friends 1891-2000.

The fonds also contains photographs, [ca. 1935]-1977, of Dr. R. Norman Jones and colleagues with spectrometers, portraits of post-doctoral fellows who worked with Dr. Jones; and spectographs on glass plates of various substances studied by Dr. Jones during the 1930's; a number of the plates have been annotated by Dr. Jones.

30,000 35mm colour slides, dating from Sept. 1937 to the late 1990's. They were taken by Dr. R. Norman Jones and document his career from his post-graduate days at Harvard through his various university and National Research Council appointments in Canada, the United States and Japan, as well as conferences, travel, residences, friends and colleagues, family, etc. The images are identified and numbered in numerical sequence and the identifications can be found in five hand-written notebooks and one three ring binder in vol. 178

Jones, Richard Norman, 1913-2001 : Richard Norman Jones was born on 20 March 1913 in Manchester, England, and attended the University of Manchester, 1930-1936. He used ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometry while completing his doctoral thesis on the elucidation of the structure of vitamin D. In 1937 Jones accepted a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University. From 1942 until 1946 he was on the Chemistry Department staff of Queen's University, Kingston, where he led a research group on ultraviolet spectroscopy. During this same period, as a Member of the NRC Associate Committee on Explosives, he was involved in a program using spectroscopy to control the manufacture of the explosive RDX.

In 1945, Dr. Jones went to the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York to help establish a steroid hormone metabolism project using infrared spectroscopy. After joining the Chemistry Division of the National Research Council in Ottawa in 1946, Dr. Jones, as Principal Research Officer and Head of Organic Spectrochemistry, established a spectroscopy laboratory. Among his many innovations was the use of computers as an aid to the efficient handling of spectroscopic data on a statistical basis.

After his retirement from NRC in 1978, Dr. Jones continued his career in various capacities at NRC and as Guest Professor, Tokyo Institute of Technology, 1979-1982, Visiting Professor at University of Alberta and at Queen's University, 1982-1984. Throughout his career, Dr. Jones was a member of and held offices in numerous professional societies and scientific organizations such as the Commission on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), 1957-1979 and the Physical Chemistry Division of IUPAC, 1969-1979. He also served on the Committee on Data for Science and Technology of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU/CODATA), 1967-1978.

In recognition of his scientific contributions, he received various honours and awards, including his appointment to the Royal Society of Canada, 1948, the Pittsburgh Spectroscopic Society Prize, 1968, the Spectroscopy Society of Canada's Herzberg Prize, 1979 and the Order of Canada in 1999. He published over 300 research papers. R. Norman Jones died on 17 Feb. 2001.
