Colonial Office 189, which is available on microfilm in its entirety, follows the usual system of arrangement for "colony" classes. This material is available on microfilm reels B-2326 to B2330.

It consists of outgoing letters, reports, commissions and instructions from the Secretary of State. Volumes 1 and 2 (1784-1787) contain instructions to the governor. However, the second volume relates not only to New Brunswick, but also to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island and to the Island of St. John (renamed Price Edward Island in 1799), and includes an index at the end of the volume. Volumes 3 to 5 are précis books for the years 1789-1790, 1794-1795 and 1801-1807 respectively. They are of a type similar to those described with CO 43. Volume 10 contains two sections: the first part includes the regular correspondence from the Secretary of State pertaining to New Brunswick (1784-1801), pp. 1-145; the second segment consists of similar material, but relating to the Island of St. John (1796-1801), pp. 151-261. Volumes 11-21 include the "Despatches" category for the period 1801-1867. Each of these volumes of despatches provides an index to the documents with a brief description of the subject matter.

Volumes 6 to 9 of CO 188 are no longer available in this class because the records they contained were returned to Canada in 1921 and are now found in RG 7, Governor General's Office., The "Offices and Individuals" category for New Brunswick, the so-called "Domestic Correspondence", may be found in CO 43, volumes 49-141 (1810-1872). Additional material similar in nature to CO 189 will be found in CO 381, Colonies, General, Entry Books, Series II, volumes 51 and 52 (1816-1867).
