Item is entitled Journal of a voyage from London to Quebec written by Francis Thomas concerning a voyage lasting twelve weeks (21 May to mid August 1833) from London to Quebec. The journey was taken by Thomas, his wife and two children. The journal gives details of the voyage across the Atlantic, his impression of British seamen, a description of the shipwreck of the HEBE or [BEBE] on the southwest coast of Newfoundland on 11 July 1833 and an account of the subsequent journey of the Thomas family to Sydney (Cape Breton), Quebec City and Montreal aboard the NIMROD, the MERCURY and the VOYAGEUR. A separate entry outlines their stay in Montreal until the next Spring and their subsequent journey by barge and steamship to Manitoba via the Ottawa River, the Rideau Canal system, and Lake Ontario in May 1834. A memorandum at the end of the journal added by D. Thomas lists birth and death dates and locations for a number of members of different generations of the Thomas family in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
