They contain correspondence including letters from Alexander Henry, George Forsyth, Richardson and Co., Robert Hamilton, and John Richardson; miscellaneous accounts including that relating to the privateer ship Vengeance; miscellaneous related records of John Porteous and several of his successors in business, microfilm reels M-478 to M-483; and the John Richardson letters including correspondence with James Phyn, Alexander Ellice, and John Inglis, 1780-1800.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Porteous, John, ca. 1799 : John Porteous emigrated from Perth, Scotland in approximately 1761. He engaged in the fur trade as a partner in Duncan, Sterling and Porteous, and in association with James Phyn and Alexander Ellice of Schenectady, N.Y. A Loyalist, he was at New York until the evacuation in 1783, when he travelled to Scotland and Nova Scotia. In ca.1788 he returned to New York, settled at Little Falls and was naturalized in 1790.Additional information:General note:John Richardson letters, 1780-1800; typescript copy made in 1909.Custodial history:Henry H. Howland presented the Porteous papers to the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, Buffalo, New York, in 1917., H.R.
