Fonds consists of transcripts which present a selection from the correspondence and other papers of Lord Shelburne relating to the colonial affairs of British North America, particularly the diplomatic negotiations with France, 1760-1763 and 1780-1783. The papers are arranged by topic and chronology, and have been copied in that order. Lists are included in most volumes, to indicate which items were copied and which were omitted as having been published or copied elsewhere; by comparison with these lists, the calendar provides more description for the items copied, but less for those omitted from the transcription.

Lansdowne, William Petty, Marquis of, 1737-1805 : William Fitzmaurice Petty first Marquis of Lansdowne, was better known as Earl of Shelburne. He served as President of the Board of Trade and Plantations in 1763, and Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 1766 to 1768. Active in political affairs until his death, he was also Secretary of State for the Home Department for a short period in 1782.
