Fonds consists of a diary, 1839-1844, containing interesting glimpses into the social life of Montreal, Toronto and Kingston in the early 1840s and descriptions of Niagara Falls and Bytown; a scrap-book, 1871-1882, containing etchings of British and Continental hotels with the dates Sir Arthur patronized them; also genealogical notes, n.d. and sketches of armorial bearings including those of the Barnes, Coxe, Rivers, Holbrooke, Gay, Potter, Beversham and d'Aranda families.

Freeling, Arthur Henry, 1820-1882 : Sir Arthur Henry Freeling Bart., was a career officer in the Royal Engineers. He rose to the rank of major-general before his retirement in 1877. In 1839, while a 1st lieutenant, Freeling was posted to Canada where he served as adjutant to Colonel W.C.E. Holloway, 1843-1844, when he was recalled to England.
