Fonds consists of reports and articles, 1923-1966; research files, n.d., 1927-1967; theoretical work, n.d., 1946-1957; lab books and research assistants, 1930-1961; academic work, n.d., 1924-1930.

The fonds also contains photographs dealing with experiments by, and areas of scientific interest to, Dr. Stedman at the National Research Council, [ca. 1943-1953]. Included are photos dealing with Vincent's Infection (trench mouth); de-icing of aircraft propellors; a water survival suit; windshield rain repellents; an abrasion tester; Stedman's three-dimensional version of the periodic table; and the "Stedman Columbine", a spoof on fractionating towers.

Stedman, Donald Frank, 1900-1967 : D.F. Stedman was born in Sussex and educated in Brighton. He came to Canada, 1915-1916, and attended the University of British Columbia, 1917-1922. In 1924 he received a Ph.D. from University College, London. He then worked in the Trail zinc smelter, taught analytical chemistry at U.B.C. and was a demonstrator in the University of Toronto Electrochemical Lab. Stedman became a research chemist for the National Research Council in July 1930 working on rubber and petroleum distillation and a new type of packing for fractionating columns which allowed for a much closer separation of petroleum and other products. Stedman's fractionating column was successfully marketed by the Foster-Wheeler Co.

During World War II Stedman was involved in de-icing of aircraft, and rain repellents for aircraft windows. After the war Stedman devoted more of his time to theoretical work. In 1947 he published "A Periodic Arrangement of the Elements" which provided a novel arrangement of the elements. Stedman went on to postulate the existence of super heavy elements, and actively search for them, but the results were inconclusive. Stedman had wide ranging research interests including plant biology, infections, inks and instrumentation. He developed a forest fire hazard recorder which measured a number of variables and predicted the likelihood of forest fires.

Dr. Stedman's papers, which remained at the NRC after his death, were organized by NRC Archives in 1980. They were transferred to the National Archives in 1986.
