Fonds consists of textual records including correspondence and subject files, original; constituency files, original; speeches, original; scrapbooks, original; printed material original; visitor's book, original; personal diary, British trip, original; addresses, certificates, diplomas, and posters, original. Also included are membership applications in the Actors Equity Association for 1954-1958, microfilm reel M-7962.

Fonds also includes photographic material depicting the career of Alan A. MacNaughton. Photos document such things as election campaigns; Presidency of the Chamber of Commerce; official and foreign visitors; meeting between Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and American President Lyndon B. Johnson at Campobello; activities as Speaker of the House of Commons; trips abroad; group portarits at Upper Canada College, Toronto, and McGill University, Montreal; the Montreal Chamber of Commerce, 1940-1941; receiving an honourary doctorate from St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick; with Pirelli employees. Also included are numerous pictures taken with international and Canadian politicians such as John and Olive Diefenbaker, Lester and Maryon Pearson, Pauline and John P. Vanier, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, members of the Royal Family, Renaud Lapointe, Sir Harold Mitchell, Muriel McQueen Ferguson, Ross MacDonald, Guy Favreau, and Louis St. Laurent.

Also included in fonds are political cartoons relating to MacNaughton's term as Speaker of the House of Commons. Drawings by Duncan Macpherson, Lewis Parker and Ed McNally.

In addition, fonds includes of sound recordings documening a broadcast with simultaneous English translation of speeches and commentary during the state visit in Québec by General Charles de Gaulle, President of France, recorded by CFMB, Montréal, 1967; recordings relating to the Actors Equity Association, 1965-1969; and a recording of a discussion between Senator MacNaughton and Senator Lazarus Phillys, 1970. Also included is a videocassette entitled Audit and accountability, the needs of Parliament, making accountability work, 1978 and a newsfilm with Alan A. MacNaughton about a meeting of the Young Liberals of Mount Royal, 1959.

MacNaughton, Alan, 1903-1999 : Alan Aylesworth MacNaughton, lawyer, Member of Parliament, Speaker of the House of Commons, was born in 1903 at Napanee, Ont., Ontario, and received his education at Upper Canada College, McGill University, London School of Economics, and the University of London. He pursued a career in business and law, being called to the Quebec Bar in 1930 and established a Law practice in Montreal. From 1935 to 1942 he was a Crown Prosecutor in Montreal. He was a director of numerous companies some of which include Aviation Electric Ltd., Brown Boveri (Canada) Ltd., and Cunard International Canada, Ltd.

He was a Member of Parliament, representing Montreal-Mount Royal from 1949 until 1966. He was appointed in 1958 as the first Opposition Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. He was appointed Speaker of the House in May 1963, and served in tis capacity until January 1966. He was called to the Senate in July 1966 and he retired in 1978.
