They consist of orders, accounts, invoices, lists, receipts, correspondence, and deal mainly with clothing for the garrison at Placentia, sent by John Netmaker, Commissary of Stores, to Colonel Henry Hawley at Kinsale, to await the arrival of Colonel John Moody (ca. 1677-1736), Deputy Governor of Placentia. General Francis Nicholson (1655-1728) was born, 12 November 1655(o.s.) at Downholme, Yorkshire. His parentage is uncertain. In his youth, he became a page of Charles Paulet (Powlett), Lord St. John of Basing (afterwards Marquess of Winchester) then entered the army in 1678. He was appointed lieutenant-governor of New York, in 1686; governor of Maryland in 1694; lieutenant-governor of Virginia in 1696, and governor in 1698. He was always an advocate of a vigorous policy against Canada and in 1710 was put in command of the expedition that captured Port Royal. In 1713 he was made governor of Nova Scotia, but left the colony almost immediately. He was appointed governor of South Carolina in 1719 and held this nominal post until his death in London on 5 March 1728.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Documents created in: London, England.Historique de la conservation :Additional Manuscript 22616 consists of official papers relating to the army, 1698-1724, which were purchased by the British Library in 1858.
