The item consists of an original letter from William [Stiles] to George Rose concerning Sir Thomas Shirley's questionable practice of acquiring money. Shirley (1769-1800) was appointed Governor of the Leeward Islands in 1781. He was the son of William Shirley, Governor of Massachusetts, 1741-1745, and of the Bahamas, 1758-1769.

Rose, George, 1744-1878 : British statesman

George Rose entered the navy at an early age, but left it in 1762 for the pursuit of a public service career. In 1784 he was granted the office of Master of the Pless in the Court of the Exchequer for life. In 1788, he suceeded to the place of Clerk of the Parliament. During 1804 and 1807 he served as Vice-President of the Board of Trade. He retired from active life in 1812.
