The item consists of original (5 p), and photocopy (1 p), of a souvenir facsimile of Lee's General Order No. 9, his farewell to the army of Northern Virginia; a printed narrative setting the message of farewell in its historical context accompanies the facsimile.

Lee, Robert E., 1807-1870 : Robert Edward Lee was born at "Stratford", Westmoreland County, Virginia on 19 January 1807. He played a significant role as leader of the Confederate armies during the American Civil War and eventually was designated general-in-chief on 6 February 1865. Lee was in charge of the Confederacy during its last ditch effort to gain advantage over the Federal armies led by General Grant. Lee surrendered to Grant's army on 9 April the same year he was designated commander-in-chief. He was regarded with great sympathy by the veterans of Northern Virginia when he appeared among them after the surrender and was considered even by the victors to be a great leader. He died on 12 October, 1870.
