Fonds consists of selections transcribed from the correspondence and documents accumulated by the Earl of Chatham and his family, and relate to the affairs of North America including military and naval activities of the Louisbourg and Quebec campaigns, peace treaties and boundaries, trade, the Newfoundland fisheries, and colonial administration. The correspondence includes letters of his wife, Lady Hester, and his sons. Papers of James Wolfe, forwarded by his mother to Lord Chatham, are scattered through the collection.

Pitt, William, Earl of Chatham, 1708-1778 : William Pitt (1708-1778), first Earl of Chatham, was first elected to Parliament in 1735. He served as Secretary of State for the Southern Department and leader in the House of Commons from December 1756 to October 1761. On being asked to form a ministry in 1766, ill health limited his participation to the sinecure of Lord Privy Seal, which office he resigned in October 1768. He was raised to the peerage as Viscount Pitt of Burton-Pynsent and Earl of Chatham (4 August 1766). His papers reflect the long and active interest he took in the affairs of British North America.

William Pitt (1769-1806), second son of the first Earl Chatham, was called to the bar in 1780 but was almost immediately elected to Parliament. Having served in the coalition administration of 1782-1783, he was appointed First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer in December 1783, becoming prime minister at 24. He was to play a dominant role in the role in the political scene for the remainder of the century.

Transcribed in the years 1914-1921 and 1939 from originals in the Public Record Office, London (PRO 30/8).

Arrangement note:

The original arrangement in bundles has been maintained for all of the eleven volumes. Annotated lists preface each bundle, indentifying the selections transcribed. The arrangement is such that correspondence and documents of a specific period of relating to a specific event, such as campaigns of the Seven Years' War or the administration of a colony, may be found in more than one bundle.
