Fonds consists of an account of the Winter family's emigration to Canada and the establishment of their homestead, written ca. 1936 by Gertrude (Winter) Quelch. Included is a clipping, 1976. Topics include the journey from England to Birtle and its hardships, equipping the homesteading expedition, building of a sod and then a wood house, farming, church services, relations with Indians, churning butter, doing laundry, and other household tasks.

Also included in the fonds are photographs depicting Campbell Malcolm Farm House, Ether Winter and Arthur Bird wedding at Winterton in 1899, Christopher Winter First Manitoba House, Blenheim School built in 1905, The Cairn House built in 1901.

Quelch, Gertrude, b. 1864 : Gertrude Winter was born in 1864 in England to Christopher (b. ca. 1822) and Caroline Winter (b. ca. 1840), the second of 13 children. In 1882 the Winter family decided to emigrate to Canada because of the small income produced by the father's literary work. The family arrived in Halifax early in the spring of 1882 and then travelled by train to Brandon, Manitoba. The family subsequently homesteaded near Birtle, Manitoba. Gertrude Winter later married and farmed east of Winnipeg until 1902, when she and her husband bought land near the original Winter homestead.

The account was transcribed in 1972 by Campbell Malcolm. Marginal information was missing on some pages of the original and is therefore missing in the photocopy.
