1 audio cassette (1 h).Language of material:EnglishAdded language of material:English, FrenchScope and content:Fonds consists of textual material including Lewis' correspondence received both as a Member of Parliament and as leader of the New Democratic Party as well as his personal corrspondence with family and friends which expresses Lewis' general interest in the C.C.F./N.D.P., Carleton University and the Socialist International. The research files contain newspaper clippings; notes; and reports and speeches made available to him in his capacity as leader of the party. His subject files consist of articles collected by Lewis and others. Fonds also consists of Lewis' speeches and articles; briefs; reports and research papers; N.D.P. press releases; a number of annotated publications; and Lewis' personal memoirs. The fonds also includes two boxes of nominal index cards for the series "Leader's Correspondence", 1963-1975.
Fonds also consists of photographs including portraits of Lewis, M.P., Leader of the New Democratic Party; Lewis with Thomas Rees, NDP Federal candidate, 1973; and Ed Broadbent. Photos also depict Lewis on his Atlantic tour, 1971; Lewis addressing railway workers demonstrating on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, 30 August 1973; activities in Swislocz, Poland, 1974; various shots of the Spanish Civil War, 1938; and Lewis at an unidentified airport, 1974, possibly promotional photographs for the Woodsworth Memorial Foundation. Photographers include John Evans, Andrews-Hunt and Murray Mosher.
Also included in the fonds are two medals. They are a Yugoslavia medal, and a City of Split, Yugoslavia medal.
In addition, the fonds includes one sound recording of a press conference with Lewis about the minority government situation in Parliament.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Lewis, David, 1909-1981 : David Lewis was born in Swislocz, Poland in 1909 and emigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1921. He was educated at McGill and Oxford Universities and was called to the Bar of the Province of Quebec in 1937.
An early believer in democratic socialism, Lewis gravitated toward the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation on his return from Oxford. He served as C.C.F. National Secretary, 1936-1950; National Vice-Chairman, 1950-1954; National Chairman, 1954-1958; and National President, 1959-1961.
Lewis was first elected to the House of Commons as the M.P. for York South in 1962. Defeated in the general election of 1963, he was elected again in York South in 1965, and served the same constituency until his defeat in 1974. During these thirteen years, he served the New Democratic Party as Deputy Leader, 1961-1971; Parliamentary Leader, 1968-1969; and Federal Leader, 1971-1974.
After his 1974 electoral defeat, David Lewis turned to teaching and writing his memoirs.
