Fonds consists of correspondence, including subseries of general correspondence, 1857-1907; general correspondence, 1835-1910; family correspondence, 1851-1907; and letterbooks, 1843-1850, 1852-1853; diaries and journals, 1882-1893; legal and financial files concerning his work as judge or senator, judicial committees on which he served and personal finances, 1823-1909; miscellaneous material; and related papers concerning Gowan's estate, publication of a biography, and correspondence with nephews, 1909-1921. Microfilmed material is located on the following microfilm reels: M-1897 to M-1901, M-1937 to M-1939.

Gowan, James Robert, 1815-1909 : Sir James Robert Gowan was born in Ireland. He was a judge of the county court of Simcoe, Ontario from 1843 until 1883 when he resigned to resume private law practice. He served as John A. Macdonald's unofficial legal draftsman and sat on several royal commissions. Two years later he was appointed to the Senate of Canada and for many years served as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Divorce. In 1905 he was created a K.C.M.G. He resigned from the Senate in 1907. He founded the first legal periodical in Canada West, the Upper Canadian Law Journal, now the Canadian Bar Review.

General note:

Originals acquired in 1962 from William R. Wolfe of Montreal. Many other copies were received in 1967 from Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker. The microfilm copies were obtained in 1969 and 1970 from originals in the possession of a family of Barrie, Ontario.

Arrangement note:

Because the microfilmed material came to the National Archives in two separate lots there are two separate sets of General Correspondence, Family Correspondence and Legal and Financial Files, which overlap although they are on separate reels of microfilm.

Location of originals note:

Two letters from Sir John A. Macdonald were copied in 1967 from originals in the possession of International Research Limited, Hawkesbury, Ontario.
