He worked briefly for the Famous Players Canadian Corporation in Toronto, before establishing and publishing The Brule District Weekly in Brule, Alta. In 1929, he graduated with an M.A. in English from the University of Alberta, shortly after which he returned to England to become associate editor of the Fortnightly Review.
Lovat Dickson founded the publishing house, Lovat Dickson Ltd., in London in 1932, and in 1933 published Lovat Dickson's Magazine. In 1938, he joined the Macmillan publishing company where he was director from 1941 to 1964. Upon returning to Canada in 1967, he established Lovat Dickson Ltd. in Toronto.
Lovat Dickson was the author of two biographies of the Canadian author and naturalist Grey Owl (Archibald Belaney 1888-1938), Half-breed: the Story of Grey Owl (1939) and Wilderness Man: The Strange Story of Grey Owl (1973). Dickson was also the author of a biography of the English poet and author Radclyffe Hall (1880-1943), Radclyffe Hall at the Well of Loneliness: a Sapphic Chronicle (1975), which he based in part upon papers he was bequeathed by Radclyffe Hall's companion Una Troubridge (d. 1963).
Dickson also wrote a biography, Richard Hillary (1950), of the English poet and airman Richard Hillary (1919-1943), who was killed in action in the Second World War, for which Dickson collected some of Hillary's papers. Dickson was also the author of a biography of the English novelist H.G. Wells (1866-1946), H.G. Wells: His Turbulent Life and Times (1969), and a history of the Royal Ontario Museum, Museum Makers (1986). Lovat Dickson published two volumes of memoirs during his lifetime, The Ante-Room (1959) and The House of Words (1963), and was working a third volume when he died in 1986.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in 1977, 1979 and 1984 from Lovat Dickson; additional material received in 1988 from Lovat Dickson's estate.Note sur le classement :The arrangement of the Lovat Dickson fonds reflects Dickson's own filing system. Related material may be found in a number of different series, so the researcher is cautioned to check all series carefully when looking for material. It should be noted that while there are two series of Correspondence, correspondence is also found scattered throughout virtually all the series.Note sur les autres formats physiques disponibles :The Radclyffe Hall series, volumes 1 to 7, is available on microfilm reels H-1196 to H-1199.
