Fonds consists of the personal and business correspondence of the Hayes family, 1742-1882; James John Hayes 1791-1870; Martin Peter Hayes, 1853-1910; and Fin Bar (Barry) Hayes, 1883-1909. The material relates to shipbuilding, Crown lands and timber administration, mining interests, scientific investigations and the Irish Home Rule.

The fonds also contains various photographs including views of the funeral of Sir John A. Macdonald, Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston, Ontario; unidentified clergyman; portrait of unidentified man; and group of men, some with axes.

Hayes, James John, 1791-1870 : James John Hayes (1791-1870) came to Canada from Cork, Ireland in 1842 and began practicing medicine in Toronto. He invested in real estate, formed a shipbuilding firm and in later years served on the Senate of the University of Toronto.

The other Hayes children are only briefly represented in this collection. Thomas studied medicine in Toronto and entered the family business; Michael became a clerk in Stratford, and James a Jesuit priest.

Hayes, Martin Peter, 1791-1870 : Martin Peter Hayes (1823-1910), the eldest son of James John Hayes, managed the shipbuilding firm, Hayes Brothers and Company, 1853-1855. From 1859, he served as a Crown Lands Agent in Madoc, Canada West, setting up an insurance office there in 1861. Martin Hayes was also a scholar who wrote literary pieces and lectured on physics and religion. In 1883, he turned to mining promotion.

Hayes, F. B. (Finn Barr), 1830-1909 : Finn Barr (Barry) Hayes (1830-1909), the youngest male member of the Hayes family, became a translator in the House of Commons of Ottawa and was vice-president of the Ottawa branch of the Irish National League.
