War Office 26 consists of 42 volumes of entry books of royal warrants relating to the formation, recruitment and disbandment of regiments and companies, and to the assignment of moneys for various military purposes. Also recorded are regulations for the clothing of the forces, and letters and reports serving as precedents. The National Archives has acquired transcript extracts of warrants relating to the formation of Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Montgomery's and Lieutenant-Colonel Simon Fraser's 1st and 2nd Highland Battalions (77th and 78th Regiments of Foot) in 1757. This material is available on microfilm reel C-10866.
