War Office 34 consists of 260 volumes of the official correspondence, monthly returns, marching orders, applications for commissions, order books, reports, and plans accumulated by Jeffrey, Baron Amherst in the course of his career, particularly during the periods of the Seven Years War and the American Revolution. Some correspondence of Amherst's predecessors in the North American command, Lord Loudon and James Abercromby, is included in the collection. The microfilmed originals are available on microfilm reels B-2637 to B-2784, and B-4577 to B-4579. Microfilm reels B-4577 to B-4579 are an index. The transcripts and photostats, volumes 1 to 68, are available on microfilm reels C-12837 to C-12848.

General note:

As per information found in the following paper guide General Inventory Manuscripts, Volume 2, MG11-MG16 (Ottawa: 1976) : "The Public Archives of Canada has acquired microfilm of all the volumes [WO34] except 124, 204, 218 and 251-259." (page 197)

Custodial history:

The Amherst Papers were presented to the War Office in 1923 by Earl Amherst and later transferred with other War Office archives to the Public Record Office. The originals were microfilmed by the American Council of Learned Societies, with the master negative held by the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
