Fonds consists of subject files, 1961-1970, vols. 1-18; minutes of meetings, 1884-1971, vols. 19-23 and microfilm, 3 reels; administrative files including correspondence, 1962-1972, vols. 25-27; grants-in-aid, 1962-1970, vols. 26-27; member sport files, 1962-1970, vols. 28-31; ledgers, 1962-1970, vol. 32. Fonds also contains photographic portraits of provincial officials of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada, 1960-1970. Fonds also contains film about an International Italy-Canada boxing meet. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels M-3209 to M-3211.

Fonds also includes some 30 plans of indoor and outdoor running facilities, including track layouts in the Hamilton Armouries, Kitchener Memorial Auditorium and Maple Leaf Gardens; proposals for an outdoor track for the St. John, New Brunswick Board of School Trustees; several plans of the Track and field facilities at Segram Stadium in Waterloo, Ontario; and unidentified plans in varying degrees of detail of tracks of different sizes, many designed by Russell A. Echlin.

Amateur Athletic Union of Canada : In December 1883 the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (M.A.A.A.) invited other Canadian amateur athletic clubs to participate in the formation of a "Canadian National Amateur Athletic Association". The object of the organization which was formed in April 1884, known originally as the Amateur Athletic Association of Canada and subsequently as the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union, was to regulate such athletic sports as were not under the control of the other associations. With a few exceptions, the "Laws of Athletics", as published by the National Association of Amateur Athletics of America were adopted and the first annual championship meeting was held in Montreal in September 1884.

In 1906 a dispute arose with the M.A.A.A. as a result of which the Montreal Association withdrew and established the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada. However these two national bodies were united in 1909 in the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada. A new constitution provided for all sports governing bodies to join the union as allied members, retaining complete jurisdiction over their own members and subject to the Union only in the protection of a strict amateur code.

At its annual meeting in Winnipeg, 13-14 November 1970, the allied members voted for the dissolution of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada.

Received in 1972 from the A.A.U. of C. (volumes 1-18 and photographs). Received in 1973 from Mr. Bob Lucas, former secretary of the A.A.U. of C. (volumes 19-23). Received in 1974 from the Fitness and Amateur Sport Directorate of the Department of Health and Welfare (volumes 25-32 and film). Received in 1975 from the University of Western Ontario (volumes 19 and 24).
