Fonds consists of records documenting Stanbury's political life, particularly as a Liberal and a Senator. Stanbury was active in the Liberal Party of Canada, especially from 1968-1976, and his records document the politics of the Party at this time. These records include annotated agendas and minutes, notes and commentaries of National and Leadership conventions, and correspondence with many prominent Liberals of the time. Stanbury's commitment to liberalism is documented through his many speeches and through his activities with the Liberal International-an organization that seeks to foster and strengthen laissez-faire economic and social policies that do not neglect the public good. Stanbury's extensive travels with the Liberal International and in order to promote Canadian trade abroad, are documented in twenty years of travel diaries. His Senate activities are largely documented in an alphabetical subject series which includes correspondence, research material, annotated agendas and memoranda, and committee reports. Stanbury's religious convictions are documented through his speeches and personal files which are related to his activities with the Presbyterian Church.

The fonds contains eight series and four sub-series: Correspondence Series; Speech Series; Liberal Party of Canada Series which includes the Subject Sub-Series, the National Executive Sub-Series, the Treasury Committee Sub-Series, and the Conventions Sub-Series; Liberal International Series; Senate Office Subject Series; Research Series; and Personal Series.

Stanbury, Richard J, 1923-2014 : Senator Richard J. Stanbury was born in Exeter Ontario and later moved to Toronto, where he still lives. He attended the University of Western Ontario and Osgoode Hall. In 1944 Stanbury married Margaret Walker and they had two children, Jane and Sally. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1948 and practised with the Toronto firm of Cassels, Brock and Blackwell. Stanbury was appointed Q.C. in 1961.

He became actively involved in the Liberal Federation of Canada (now the Liberal Party of Canada) after its defeat to the Conservatives in 1958. Stanbury was President of the Toronto and District Liberal Association (1960-1964), a member of the Liberal Federation Campaign Committee (1961-1967), President of the Liberal Federation of Canada (1968-1973), Chairman of the Treasury Committee (1974-1976) and Co-Chairman of the 1984 Leadership Convention's Candidates Expenses Committee. He was summoned to the Senate on 13 February 1968.

As a Senator, Stanbury was involved with several committees including the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee as both Chairman and Co-Chairman; the Joint Commons/Senate Committee on Conflict of Interest as Co-Chairman; and he was the Chairman of the Special Committee on the Constitution. He promoted the development of Canadian trade overseas and founded the Canada-Arab Business Council, the Canada-Taiwan Trade Council, and the Canada-India Business Council in the mid 1970s, and sat on the International Affairs Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The Senator was also a member of the Liberal International. Stanbury chaired the Presbyterian Church Builing Corporation for twenty years and sat on the Board of Directors of Rogers Communications and Beneficial Finance Company of Canada. He retired from the Senate in May 1998.
