Collection search - Clerk of the Crown in Chancery, election records. Lower Canada and Canada East [textual record]

These records formed part of the S Series, transferred in 1906 to the Archives by the Secretary of State, prior to the creation of RG 4 in 1950. The poll books in volume 21 were acquired with the Neilson Collection (see MG 24, B 1).

Microfiche of many printed proclamations of the polls were made in 1986 by the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproduction.

Some poll books have been found in the judicial archives of Quebec (see MG 8, A 27). Poll books and other records relating to contested elections may have been forwarded to committees of Parliament for investigation and thus have suffered the same fate as the legislative records. Writs of summons for the Council and Proclamations summoning or dissolving Parliament are found in RG 4, B 7, or astray with correspondence of the Civil Secretary. Documents relating to election expenditures, most particularly to the Commissions of Inquiry into the accounts of returning officers in 1855 and 1856, should be sought in RG 4, C 1.
