The fonds consists of the papers of John Bower Lewis of Richmond, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec and his family. It includes deeds of sale of land, business contracts and correspondence, family correspondence, legal documents, newspaper clippings, and other manuscripts. Some of the more interesting items are a map of Hull township originally made by T. Davis in 1801 and copied in 1893; a list of prizes awarded at the agricultural fair, Richmond and Goulbourn Agricultural Society, 1862; a list of subscribers to the new Protestant church in Richmond; letters pertaining to Captain Thomas Lewis's commission in the Carleton County militia; probate documents of John Bower Lewis Sr., 1858; letters of religious appointment of Richard Lewis; and press clippings relating to the funeral of John Bower Lewis Jr., former mayor of Ottawa, 1874.

Lewis, John Bower (family) : Captain John Bower Lewis served in the British Army with the 88th Infantry Regiment. He brought his wife, Henrietta Jones, and family to Upper Canada in 1820 and settled in the Richmond military settlement established by Colonel George Thew Burke. Captain J. B. Lewis died 19 September 1849. Probate documents describe him as a merchant of Richmond, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec and mention several children, including John Bower, William Francis, Richard, Thomas, Catherine, Anna, Mary Bower, and Henrietta Susannah.

John Bower Lewis Jr. was born 18 March 1817 in France and studied law in Toronto. He was admitted to the bar in 1839 and practised law in Bytown (Ottawa, Ontario), establishing the firm Lewis and Pinhey with partner Charles H. Pinhey. Lewis became a prominent citizen in Bytown, where he served on the county council and held a variety of public offices. He was elected the second mayor of Bytown and in 1855 became the first mayor of Ottawa. He was elected to the Dominion Parliament in 1872 for Ottawa as a Liberal-Conservative but died 24 January 1874. Lewis was married three times (to Anna Eccles in 1840, Helen Street in 1843, and Elizabeth Susan Wilson in 1856) and had eleven children.

Custodial history:

The original donation (files 1-4) was made in 1977 by Gladys Lewis of Ottawa, Ontario. Alan D. McLay of Ottawa donated fifteen additional documents (files 5-12) in 2002. This material had come down to him through his mother, Catherine Lucy Drummond (wife of Alexander Boyd McLay), grandmother Catherine Lewis Pinhey (wife of Henry Alexander Drummond), and great-grandmother Catherine Lewis (wife of Charles H. Pinhey) who was a daughter of Captain John Bower Lewis of Richmond, Ontario.
