The Trades Council of Ottawa, formed in 1873 and a member of the Canadian Labour Union (est. 1873), had collapsed due to opposition from the Order of the Knights of Labour. It was not until 1897 that Ottawa had another operational council. The Allied Trades and Labour Association (A.T.L.A.) was chartered by the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada (est. 1886) as well as the American Federation of Labour. Unlike the Trades Council of Ottawa, it admitted both skilled and unskilled labour.
In 1957, A.T.L.A., now affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress, a recent merger of the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada and the Canadian Congress of Labour, changed its name to the Ottawa and District Trades and Labour Council. Soon thereafter the name was shortened to the Ottawa and District Labour Council.Additional information:General note:Received between 1975 and 1988 from the Ottawa and District Labour Council.Custodial history:De-accessioned to the City of Ottawa Archives, 1 April 2015.Arrangement note:Oversize certificates and posters kept in horizontal storage were bar-coded as volumes 57-63, and are not listed in the textual finding aid.Location of originals note:City of Ottawa ArchivesSubject heading:- General Strike, Winnipeg, Man., 1919
