Fonds consists of Town Planning Institute of Canada, early series; Institute of Professional Town Planners; general correspondence and subject files; membership files; annual meetings; regional organizations and affiliates; planning studies and research material; W.F. Burditt papers; Arthur G. Dalzell papers. Photographic material consists of a group photo of the 7th Annual Conference of the Town Planning Institute of Canada, Vancouver, British Columbia, 1927. Sound recording is an interview of J.H. Doughty-Davies by B. Wiesman and D. South, 1970.

Canadian Institute of Planners : The Town Planning Institute of Canada (T.P.I.C.) was formed in Ottawa in 1919, with the objective of promoting sound urban planning through exchange of information, promotion of research and maintenance of professional standards among planners. It received a federal charter in 1923, attained a membership of some 350 in branches across the country, and published a journal called Town Planning. The institute ceased to function in 1931, because of the Depression, and remained moribund until 1952.

In 1947, a small group of planners established the Institute of Professional Town Planners (I.P.T.P.), chartered by the Province of Ontario, with objectives similar to those of the T.P.I.C. In 1952, the Executive of I.P.T.P. revived the charter of the T.P.I.C. and transferred the memberships of the I.P.T.P. to the older organization. The revived Town Planning Institute of Canada held its first annual meeting in 1953, and in 1959 began publishing a journal called Plan. In 1974, its name was changed to the Canadian Institute of Planners.
