Fonds consists of land records of William Caldwell, political and business correspondence of his son Francis Caldwell, and official and personal correspondence of his son Capt. Billy Caldwell of the Indian Department. The most significant portions of the papers cover the years 1814-18 and 1836-40, with passing references to the War of 1812, and Rebellion of 1837.

There is also microfilm of the land records of William Caldwell, political and business correspondence of his son Francis Caldwell and official and personal correspondence of his son Capt. Billy Caldwell, 1814-1818, 1836-1840. This material is located on microfilm reel M-8714.

Caldwell, William, 1750?-1822 : Colonel William Caldwell was a native of Ireland and immigrated to the southern colonies of America. When the colonies rebelled, he took the Loyalists side. He was a renowned border raider and a hero of the War of 1812. In May 1814, he was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs. His family has been closely identified with some of the most stirring events of Canadian History. Four of his sons were officers in the War of 1812. Francis Caldwell (1791-1851) became a prominent man in politics. Billy Caldwell (d. 1841) served as an officer in the Indian Department.
