Fonds consists of the records of the Registrar's functions and retained in RG 4. It includes drafts of commissions and letters patent for land grants, appointments to office, patents of invention, etc., with related documentation and fiats from the Attorney General authorizing the engrossing of those documents (RG 4 series: B 9, B 10, B 15, and B 74). All of these series are fragmentary and subject to review as a preliminary to rationalization of misfilings. Some undelivered documents are included in the aforementioned series as well as in RG 4 B 11 and RG 4 B 78. Lists of persons commissioned and registers of commissions or letters patent and other documents are found in RG 4 series B 9, B 42 and B 26. Declarations of aliens form series RG 4 B 45. All these series are closely related to records found in RG 68.

Quebec, Lower Canada and Canada East. Provincial Registrar : In his capacity as Registrar, the Provincial Secretary was responsible for preserving entrybooks or registers to record the text of documents issued over the Great Seal (of which he was custodian) and for searching them when necessary to provide copies of documents on request, and for preparing returns of information requested by the Legislature. The registers and entrybooks recorded an abstract or the full text of commissions, letters patent and instruments of revocation. Most of the bound entrybooks and registers, as well as many loose documents retained by the Registrar, fell into the custody of the Registrar General of Canada and are now found in RG 68. With these are an extensive series of index volumes.

From 1841 to 1851, the office of Registrar was separated from that of Provincial Secretary. At all times, the records of the Registrar's functions were generally maintained as distinct series, a separation more readily apparent than that between the functions of Civil Secretary and Provincial Secretary. An equally important separation was maintained between the offices of Provincial Secretary and Registrar for the two parts of the province (Canada East and Canada West) for many but not all functions, as is reflected in the surviving records.
