Fonds consists of material pertaining to the families of Martha Field and her sister Fanny Simpson, 1765-1984; including four cookbooks, c. 1842-1972; papers relating to the Reverend Maltyward Simpson of Mickfield, 1829-1873; the diaries of Frances Simpson, 1872-1873, 1881; family correspondence of five generations of Frances Simpson, 1900-1984, photocopies, 1765-1941; and miscellaneous items.

The fonds also contains photographs including: portraits of seven generations of the Covert, Maltyward, Gay, Simpson, Robertson and Gray families, [ca.1851-1983]; carte-de-visite of Six Nation Indians, Brandford, [ca.1865]; and a collection of late 19th and early 20th century greeting cards.

Field, Martha, 1814-1884 (family) : Martha Field (1814-1884) was born at Aldborough New Hall, Norfolk, the elder daughter of John Johnson Gay, J.P. and D.L., of Aldorough, and his wife Martha, [natural] daughter of General John Covert of Sussex. In 1850 she married Oliver Field (ca. 1816-1874) of Teignmouth, Devon, a sea captain in the East India trade, who was descended from Oliver Cromwell.

Her younger sister Frances (1821-1891) married the Reverend Maltyward Simpson (1804-1872), rector of Mickfield, Suffolk, in 1845. After her husband's death, Frances Simpson sent her two eldest sons to settle in Ontario, under the direction of her cousin, Henry Covert of Port Hope, while she took the rest of her large family to further their education in France. In 1879, she brought the whole family to Canada and settled in Hamilton, Ontario, where she lived fashionably until her death, and was survived by eight children.

Richard Gay (1820-1887), the youngest brother of Martha Field and Fanny Simpson, apparently served in the Austrian army and eventually settled at Prague, in what later became Czechoslovakia.

General note:

The item relating to the Reverend Donald McKenzie, previously described here, was transferred in 1981 to MG 24, J 50.
Martha Field's cookbook and 7 photographs were received in 1982 from Mrs. Catharine Gray of Kanata, Ont., great-granddaughter of Francis Simpson, through the courtesey of Hilary Russell of Ottawa, Ont.
The rest of the collection including photocopies of additional material was received in 1985 from Miss Louise Robertson of Wiarton, Ont., sister of Mrs Gray who holds the originals.
