Lalkow, Danilo Ivanov, 1892-1966 : Danilo I. Lalkow, diplomat and public servant, was born at Nikolayev in southern Ukraine and educated in medicine at the Universities of Moscow and Odessa. During World War I, he served as a military surgeon in the Russian army. Early in 1919, he married Elizabeth Hegyi (1896-1976). Later that year, he joined the military medical mission of the Ukrainian National Republic (U.N.R.) to Vienna and in 1920, because of his knowledge of Hungarian and various Slavic languages, was appointed secretary of the U.N.R. diplomatic mission Hungary.

He held this position until 1924, when he and his wife immigrated to Canada. They were naturalized in 1929. From 1925 to 1941, Lalkow worked with immigrants as a travelling passenger agent for Canadian Pacific Steamships. In 1941, he joined the federal civil service as a postal censor, and immediately after World War II, he was hired as an interpreter in the British section of the Allied Control Commission for Germany and Austria. Lalkow worked in the government translations bureau in Ottawa during the 1950's and retired in 1960.
