The fonds consists of the following copied material: a treatise on the history of the colony and fishery of Newfoundland, ca. 1677 (ff. 15-31v). Included are: "An Account of the Colony and Fishery of Newfoundland, And the Present state thereof" (ff. 15-25v); a list of the chief fishing harbours in Newfoundland (f. 26); a census of the Newfoundland settlements from Trepassy to Bonavista, 1677 (ff. 26v-27v); an account of the fishing trade, 1615 (f. 28); accounts of the sack ships that fetched Newfoundland fish to market and of their destinations, 1677 (ff. 28v-29); an account of the French colony and trade of Newfoundland (ff. 29v-30v); and an account of French ships fishing on the coast of Newfoundland, 1676 (ff. 31-31v).

A map of Terra Nova, [ca. 1684, by William Hack (fl. 1680-1710)], which was in the papers (ff. 8-9v), was not transcribed (43 pages) in 1919, but in 1973 a copy of it held in the Cartographic and Architectural Archives Division (CAAD), in the Hulbert Collection, Series II, Volume IV, No. 39 (CAAD reference NMC-117644) was placed with the rest of the material, for the convenience of researchers.

Copy of a memorial concerning the British fishery in North America with a plan for securing it by capturing Cape Breton (ff. 4-7). On 24 August 1742, the memorial was delivered [by Sir Peter Thompson?] to Lord Carteret (1690-1763), later Earl Granville, Secretary of State, 1742-1744. Then on 31 January 1744, it was delivered to Andrew Stone (1703-1773), the Duke of Newcastle's Undersecretary of State, 1734-1749 and 1750-1751. According to a note provided by Sir Peter Thompson, points made in this memorial were used in the planning of armaments for the attack on Cape Breton in the "last war."

Thompson, Peter, F.R.S., fl. 1742-1745 : Sir Peter Thompson (fl. 1742-1745) was the son of Thomas Thompson. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Additional Manuscripts 13972, which was added to the holdings of the British Museum (now the British Library) in 1843, contains material relating to Newfoundland and Cape Breton that appears to have belonged to Sir Peter Thompson, F.R.S. In 1919, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two excerpts (ff. 4-7, 15-31v) from them.
