Fonds consists of letters written by Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) to his brother Alexander, as well as a few notes by Thomas' wife Jane, his brother John, and mother, Janet (1820-1873). The correspondence was the result of Thomas' moves across southern Scotland and ultimately to London, and Alexander's emigration to Canada; it reveals Thomas Carlyle's family and professional concerns. The 34 letters located here represent only part of the complete correspondence between Thomas and Alexander; most of Thomas Carlyle's letters to Alexander were published by Edwin Marrs, The Letters of Thomas Carlyle to his Brother Alexander (Cambridge, Mass., 1968).

Carlyle, Alexander, 1797-1876 : Alexander Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, the son of stone mason James Carlyle and his wife Margaret Aitken. His elder brother, Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was the eminent Victorian author and historian.

Alexander Carlyle married Janet Clow in 1830, but his attempts at farming at Craigenputtock, business in Anan, and a shop in Ecclefechan all proved unsuccessful. In 1843, Alexander and his family emigrated to America, spending eight months with his brother-in-law Robert Clow in Alton, New York before continuing their journey to Brantford, Ontario. The Carlyles bought a farm outside Brantford, near Alexander's half-brother, John (Old Sandbed) Carlyle and his family, and became prosperous members of the local community.
