Fonds consists of microfilmed family correspondence including compositions from Smith's son Richard at Sackville Academy, 1849 and a summary of Smith's will, 1879; and appointments as Pictou County Justice of the Peace and as a major in the 2nd Battalion Pictou Regiment Militia. Miscellaneous material includes a graphic description of an Atlantic crossing 1846 and drawings of mining equipment. There are also newsclippings and correspondence for the period 1952-1954 in which Joseph's great grand-daughter Edith Wagstaff Smith of Devon, N.S. recalls the beginnings of mining, and of life at Mount Rundell, the General Mining Association company mansion at Stellaston, N.S. This material is located on microfilm reel A-925.

Smith, Joseph, 1806-1884 : Mining Engineer.

Richard Smith (1783-1868) had been sent to Nova Scotia by his employers, Messrs. Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, London jewellers to exploit the mineral lease granted to the company by the Duke of York in 1826. He became the first general mine superintendent of the General Mining Association (GMA) and began the industrialization of Pictou County and Cape Breton at Sydney. His nephew Joseph Smith succeeded him in 1836 both as general manager and resident society focus at the company mansion, Mount Rundell until his return to England in the 1840s. The period of Smith management (1827-1840) at GMA witnessed a considerable development of coal mining in the area.
