The Admiralty Records within the British Military and Naval Records consist of two separate and distinct series. The Admiralty Lake Service records consist of 72 volumes of records accumulated by the Naval Commissioner and the Naval Storekeeper on the Great Lakes. The Admiralty Pacific Station Records bring together 39 volumes of original records and copies of five additional volumes (two on microfilm and three in photocopy format) accumulated by the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Station at Esquimalt.

British Military and Naval Records (London, England) : This collection represents the records accumulated by the Royal Navy on the Great Lakes, 1814-1833, and on the Pacific Station at Esquimalt, 1848-1903. Although the subsections of this class are not closely interrelated, they have been assembled and described as one group for convenience.

The Royal Navy assumed responsibility for the naval service on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812, replacing the Provincial Marine, and continued to be responsible for naval defences on the lakes through the 1860s.

From the year 1848, ships of the Royal Navy's Pacific Squadron began to use Esquimalt harbour, which became its permanent base in 1862. The base was transferred to Canada in 1910.

Halifax was the main station for the Royal Navy during the War of 1812, serving as a base for actions against the US east coast, as well as a provisioning base for ports and ships on the Great Lakes.

(Other) Finding Aid 762 describes the Pacific Station records (series III B) at the volume or file level. The descriptive list of volume contents for the originals (volumes 1-39) also correlates microfilm reel numbers. The contents of the two volumes on microfilm reel M-126 and the photocopies (volumes 40-42) are described at the file level. 762 1800

The Preliminary Inventory to Record Group 8, British Military and Naval Records, which prefaces Finding Aid 1800, includes a list of volumes for both the Admiralty Lake Service Records (sub-series III A) and the Admiralty Pacific Station Records (sub-series III B). This portion of FA 1800 is available on microfilm, reel C-11790.
