The class consists of records of the Plantations department accumulated by the Secretary to the Board of Customs. It included all manner of documents referred by subordinate officials in the colonies for its information, action or decision. Letters from the colonies might be accompanied by accounts, petitions, reports of seizures and disputes, certificates of ship registry and of clearances outward, bills of health and passenger manifests, as well as copies of colonial statutes relating to Customs and the regulation of trade. The Secretary and his staff filed the incoming documents first by jurisdiction (place of origin), then chronologically within five categories entitled Plantations (that is, correspondence, memoranda and reports), selected papers, seizures, waterguard journals and miscellaneous. The miscellaneous category included documents relating to specific disputes and appeals, enforcement of the Passenger Acts, ship registration, appointment and payment of staff, and complaints against staff.

Textual records (Electronic) Finding Aid No. 90 contains a microfilm shelf list, by reel number, of the selected volumes (6207-6223, 6244, 6422-6426, 6446-6539, and 6570-6642), several of which were filmed out of strict numerical order. Volume titles identify the province, dates and nature of contents (by subject or type of documents). MSS0090 (90: Open)

Textual records (Electronic) Finding Aid No. 800 provides extensive introductory notes on the history of the Board of Customs and the nature of the records it accumulated. In the body, the listing of volume titles has been arranged geographically, by port, province or region: British North America, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, Quebec (port), Montreal (port), and Canada (province). Records of ownership transfers or re-registration of vessels (volume 6211) and ships registered at Quebec (volume 6627) are listed by ship name. MSS0800 (90: Open)

General note:

Copies of selected volumes relating to British North America, principally for the period 1814-1855, were acquired by the National Archives of Canada when the documents were in the custody of H.M. Customs and Excise Library.
The volume numbers appearing on the microfilm and in the finding aids are those used while the records were at King's Beam House. A table of concordance to correlate them with the current volume designations at the Public Record Office has not been compiled.
