Fonds consists of selected records of Newman, Hunt & Company, its predecessors and associates, 1774-1899, relating to the fisheries of Newfoundland and trade in cod and port. A total of 29,090 pages were copied, comprising the Catalogue or Long List of the Library; 73 numbered volumes; and some miscellaneous papers. The material is located on microfilm reels A-35 to A-74.

Newman, Hunt & Company : The firms of Newman, Hunt & Company; Hunt, Roope & Company, London and Oporto; and Newman & Company, Newfoundland, are the members of a network of companies engaged in the port wine and cod-fish trade since the late sixteenth-century. The firms originated with the Dartmouth families of Newman, Mudd, Roope, Holdsworth and Hunt, whose association with the Newfoundland fisheries dates from 1589.

In the late seventeenth century the Newmans discovered the process of maturing port during sea voyages and began a regular practice of maturing their port in Newfoundland. The firm of Newman & Company, of Harbour Breton was formed in 1700. Holdsworth, Olive & Newman was formed in 1735 and now goes under the name of Hunt, Roope & Company of Portugal. The London company dates from 1782 and was first known as Newman & Land; the Dartmouth office was closed in 1815. The cod-fish business was given up in 1907, in the belief that it was declining, and the merchant fleet was disposed of in 1911.
