Fonds consists of the papers of the Askin family, including correspondence, legal papers, militia records, diaries, and business records. The papers reflect the interests and activities of John and Charles Askin. They have been arranged in series of draft correspondence of John Askin (Volumes 1-4) and Charles Askin (Volumes 5-8); letters received (Volumes 9-37); legal papers (Volumes 38-39); militia records, chiefly of the War of 1812 (Volumes 40-41); diaries (Volumes 42-43); miscellaneous records and printed matter, including survey papers (Volumes 44-46); and accounts and business records (Volumes 47-68). Volume 69 contains index cards for the Askin papers, more specifically the Todd and McGill correspondence, located in the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library.

Askin (Family) : John Askin (ca. 1739-1815) was engaged in the fur trade at Michilimackinac, 1765-1779, and Detroit, 1780-1802, and in land speculation in the Detroit and Windsor region. After the surrender of Detroit to the Americans in settlement of the boundary, he moved to Windsor. His son, Charles Askin (d. 1869), qualified as a land surveyor at Hamilton and Windsor, served during the War of 1812, and spent many of his later years as a magistrate.

General note:

The bulk of the collection was received in 1908. A portion of the Askin papers, chiefly for the period 1764-1802, was presented to the Detroit Public Library in 1914 by Clarence M. Burton.

Selected documents from both collections were published by Milo Quaife in THE ASKIN PAPERS (Detroit, 1928 and 1931, 2 vols.).
