The fonds consists of documents produced by the Honourable Roland Almon Ritchie in his capacity as Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. It includes decisions files which contain agreements or disagreements with other judges, opinions, drafts, notes and memoranda dated from 1959 to 1972 (volumes 1-15). The fonds also contains souvenirs and family records. They consists of photographs, medals, audiocassettes, a seal, and textual records. These relate to various members of the Ritchie and Stewart families including his brother, diplomat Charles S.A. Ritchie, their parents, children, and wives.

Ritchie, Roland Almon, 1910-1988 : Roland Almon Ritchie was born in Halifax on 19 June 1910. He was educated at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and at the University of King's College in Halifax before going to Oxford University in England. At the age of 24, Mr. Roland A. Ritchie was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar and became a King's Counsel at the age of 40.

Roland A. Ritchie began his legal practice in 1934 with the Halifax law firm known as Stewart, Smith, MacKeen and Rogers, and formed a professional association with the late H.P. MacKeen, Q.C., who later became the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Roland A. Ritchie's law career was interrupted during the Second World War when he served as an artillery captain R.C.A. West N.S. Ergt., 4th Light Anti Aircraft Regt. (100th Batty), and as assistant judge advocate general with the 3rd Canadian Division from 1940 to 1944. From 1945 until his appointment to the bench, he practiced law in Halifax as a partner in the firm Daley, Phinney & Ritchie, which later became Daley, Ritchie, Black & Moreira. He was also a lecturer at the faculty of law at Dalhousie University. He later acted as counsel to the Royal Commission examining Newfoundland's terms of union with Canada. He was appointed King's Counsel, January 5, 1950 for Nova Scotia and Vice-president of Nova Scotia Barristers Society from 1958 to 1959.

Roland Almon Ritchie was appointed Justice to the Supreme Court of Canada on May 5, 1959. He replaced Justice Ivan Cleveland Rand and at the age of 48, was the youngest member on the Supreme Court bench for that time. He followed in the steps of his great uncle, Sir William Johnston Ritchie, chief justice of that court between 1879 and 1892. One of the hightlight of Roland A. Ritchie's judicial career was his ruling in the Drybones case and Lavell Case. He ruled that John Diefenbaker's Bill of Rights took precedence over the Indian Act. He retired from the Supreme Court of Canada on October 1984 after sitting 25 years. Mr. Ritchie was an honorary fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford, a former chancellor of the University of King's College and a former governor of Dalhousie University and King's College. He received the country's highest honor in 1985 when he became a Companion of the Order of Canada. Mr. Roland A. Ritchie was the brother of the well-known diplomat Mr. Charles S. A. Ritchie. He died on June 5 1988.
