Fonds consists of correspondence, 1777-1789, as clerk to Thomas Robison and later as clerk for George Forsyth and Edward Pollard; with a list of artificers brought to Quebec by Gabriel Christie, 1776, a statement of services performed by Goring for Robert Hamilton of Queenston, U.C., 1800-1810, and a petition for a deed to land, 1833 [178 pages]. Also included are notebooks, 1790-1803, n.d., containing house and farm expenses, accounts, poems, short stories and maxims (on microfilm only).

Goring, Francis, fl. 1776-1833 : Francis Goring (fl. 1776-1833) came to Canada in 1776 as clerk to Gabriel Christie, deputy quarter master general. He left this post almost immediately and settled in the Niagara area. Here Goring served as clerk for Thomas Robinson, and subsequently for George Forsyth and Edward Pollard, who purchased Robinson's business. Later Goring engaged in trade ventures with other merchants and from 1800 to 1810, was in the employ of Robert Hamilton.

The original records of 1777-1833 were presented in 1915 by Miss Catherine Merritt with the W.H. Merritt papers (see MG 24 E 1).

Location of originals note:

The notebooks of 1790-1803 were microfilmed from the originals loaned by Mary Goring Dann of Penfield, N.Y., USA.
