Colonial Office 381 is a separate series of entry books, maintained in addition to Series I of the entry books in CO 324. This series may have been maintained by the office of the Chief Clerk before it became part of the "General" department. The contents generally consist of commissions, instructions, orders-in-council, letters patent, warrants, additional instructions and other formal documents relating to the appointment of governors, lieutenant-governors, executive and legislative councillors, judges and court officials, customs officers and lesser colonial officials, as well as copies of documents authorizing the establishment of legislative councils, vice-admiralty courts and bishoprics.

The volumes entitled "North America" appear to include formal documents bearing on appointments other than those of governors and lieutenant-governors. The latter appointments may be found in the appropriate volumes for the colony. Indexes are included at the end of each volume, and generally include a chronological list of commissions, instructions, petitions, and so forth. There is also a separate chronological listing for warrants. Some of the later volumes include indexes.

CO 381 is available on microfilm reels B-889 and B-890, B-3217 to B-3222. The National Archives of Canada has acquired microfilm copies of selected volumes and extracts from volumes 18, 22-24, 51-54, 59-65, 77, 88-90.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid for British Records on Microfilm lists the material on each reel of microfilm. A number of contemporary registers are available as finding aids, but must be used with caution because of the vagaries of arrangement and classification. These registers include CO 570, Colonies, General, Secret Entry Books and Registers of Out-Letters. The precise volumes of these registers which apply to CO 381 have not been identified, nor have any other register or index classes which might be useful as finding aids to CO 381.
