Collection consists of a meteorological chart and journal, 19 Sept. 1851 to 21 February 1852 kept on H.M.S. PLOVER on a "journey through Port Clarence and Behring Straits"; a meteorological chart and log of the PLOVER in the St Lawrence River from Sept. 1852 to July 1854, and a map entitled "Chart from Port Barrow to the River Colville". The journal notes weather conditions, sledge expeditions, Inuit activities, cricket on ice and ship's duties. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1716.

Vernon, Charles Egerton Harcourt, 1827-1872 : Charles Egerton Harcourt Vernon (1827-1872) was a son of Granville Harcourt-Vernon and Frances Julia Eyre of Grove Hall, Nottinghamshire. He received a commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1849, and was appointed lieutenant on HMS Plover in September 1851.
